Orthotic Prosthtics Council Pakistan

A. a,

Here i would like to share an issue with you.

More than 200 graduates have been produced since the inception of PIPOS. Now the opening of new O&P educational schools in Karachi and Rawalpindi will saturate the society more in coming years. People are now much aware than before. O & P demands have been increased day by day. Ten years back, one cannot imagine the job opportunities like today. Educational standards are going higher day by day.

But all is not good some where. If we talk about the inland situation then Jobs are more in private sector than in public / government sector. Although the job opportunities have been increased but still limited to the private sector. Only two or three public sector O&P Setups are working. Government jobs are almost occupied by technicians and there is no way to replace them. Any person who knows what artificial limb is and what a splint can be an Orthotist / Prosthetist in Pakistan. Traditional technicians have opened the setups all over the country and giving no space to any one due to their low cost services.

Brain drain of O&P professionals in last years has been increased. Competition for jobs has been raised out side the country due to financial recession and limited job opportunities. Although our O&P Professionals are proving their skills and capabilities around the globe but no one can realize their struggle or problems until faced by him / herself. A university degree with a certificate of ISPO cat II is the only proof to stand among them who have been backed and standardized by their national regulatory councils and licencing authorities.

In Pakistan, there is no licencing authority for the Orthotists/Prosthetists. No rules and regulations have been implemented to standardized the Orthotics Prosthetics

practice in the country. There are national councils for nearly every medical profession. Following is a brief list.

· Pakistan Medical & Dental Council
· Pakistan Engineering Council
· National Council for Homeopathy
· Pakistan Veterinary Medical Council
· National Council of Tibb
· Pakistan nursing council
· Pakistan Paramedical Council
National Association of Prosthetics Orthotics Paksitan is only an association of professionals , but not allowed to provide the licensing or regulating the orthotic prosthetic practice in Pakistan. We must need an ORTHOTIC PROSTHETIC COUNCIL of PAKISTAN. This council can provide the license and regulate the practice just like PMDC or other in Pakistan.

The purpose of this open email is just to request all the teachers, seniors, Fellows and juniors, to please join together to develop this council. This may be the problem of few now, but we all may have in future.

Please send your suggestions and how you can help in this regards.

Best of luck,

Irtaza Kazmi

    Dear colleagues
The idea is excellent and will help all CPOs and O&P profession in Pakistan. The question is how to materialise this idea?
I will request Mr.Irtaza and other colleagues to find out all the info (constitution, rules of business etc.) about all such councils which exist for other professions. On the basis of these, We will create our own draft (rules and regulations) and then will see to which authority we should present it? We have to see weather these organisations are government or semi government and what are the requirements for registration. First we have to find out all facts and search the way which can lead to our goal. In country like Pakistan with major problems this issue will not be seen as urgent but we have to spend our efforts and finance to make it happen.
    Thanks

    A.S.A
    hi everyone.

the idea proposed by Mr. Irtaza Kazmi is ofcourse the emblem that would bring revolution in the field of prosthetic and orthotics concerning pakistan. but more important than just applausing the idea is to work and shape the idea into reality.

i think that most important thing to frame this idea into working model is to establish strong links with HEC. yet no prosthetic and orthotic personality of pakistan has not worked on establishing links with HEC. hope i m not wrong and my suggestion would be acceptable in the prestigious highness of all my seniors.

    regards,

  6. Basreen Talat says:

This is Basreen from Doha Qatar. I read the email and would like to say that yes we need such organization on national level.

We are strong as far as we are belonging to PIPOS, Allahamdullelah! but lacking here if see ourselves from this aspect.

U proceed we are with you and will help the council. Though its a tough job as I had been a member of WORKING GROUP after election in PIPOS in a grand PIPOSIONS gathering but unfortunately it couldn’t work.

Once the body get registered, its better to fix some registration fee. For example from local PIPOSIONS you can charge Rs 500 and from overseas the body can charge Rs.1000.

The efforts will always be appreciated.

    Regards
    Basreen

    Dear colleaques,
I am very happy to hear about it, yes we all are facing this problem with in Pakistan as well as abroad. with out P&O national registration and Licencing authority, our qualification can not get significent weightage and we can not overcome current issues as Mr. Irtiza have highlighted.
I strongly support this appreciable move to P&O future that is worthful globally for all of our graduates.

  8. shaheen khan says:

    salam
really it will be very great if we have also some licence authority.specially we ,who r working abroad, need this.i will tell u something, as i work before in Saudi Arabia also.by practical no body compete us,allhumdullah, same here in qatar .where ever the piposen work thy can be differentiated by their work.we should be thankful to the dept, that thy gave us such training, but the only thing is that we don,t have any proper source of identification, like council.same situation like we r facing,we have other nationality ppl ,and thy provid everything, but we r facing too much problems, inside the country it is enough that u r from pipose ,but out side we must have some council,
it is not difficult,if we all want and together we can make it.yearlly fee can also be suggested, even this is good for those who working in pakistan,as you mention in ur email about the technician working in government sector, and the p&o is jobless.it will really improve our condition not only within the country, also internationally.
    hope for the best.

    Salam Colleagues,
The idea to have Registration & licenibg Authority in pakistan for P&O is urgently needed,
for this we have to work together, full supprot from juniors and great ideas from the seniors can materialise or acheive this goal.

    • Asif Ali says:

      From 10 may till now
      i come to conclusion that
the seniors of this profession under stand the importance of this council
But the student r still in dream land
      as we were.
that Jobs r waiting for us
Still no P&O professional gets job in Govt. secotr
      if this council exsist
I hope the condition will change
      in My View
      as 1st step

Their will be at least 6 members 1 of each province also islamabad & Kashmir
than by the help of them polices will be made

  13. Saad Saleem says:

    AOA,
I think still we are not so much stable so that we can act on our own behalf because the prosthetics and orthotics has still to achieve a lot of milestones in PAKISTAN but according to me most of the times we are just following things why we should not make our own rules and implement our own knowledge that we think and it might be a better solution for the problem concerned. Yet we need to do a lot of work to attain a presentable position. Building an organization OR council regarding Orthotics and Prosthetics in PAKISTAN will really groom new ideas on the ground.

  14. Mazhar Hussain Tazagrami says:

    Dear colleagues
I think we should start work on the realisation of this idea (council) which everybody has appreciated and agreed upon. The website is already launched by our talented and dedicated friend Mr.Irtaza.Just to keep the minds warm, I am starting with the objectives of this council. I request all of you to include more points or even add to the ones I have written. When the objectives are finalized, then we can go to the other steps like membership form, criteria, structure, etc.

    Objectives:
-This is a purely non profitable and non political organisation.
    -The main purpose is to regulate and work for the betterment of O&P profession and professionals in Pakistan. This means;
-To assess/evaluate the professional levels/standards of O&P institutes, professionals and issue licences accordingly.
-To publish yearly magazine to increase the awareness about the profession and keep the professionals updated regarding new developments in the field locally and internationally.
-To struggle in government sector to create more jobs and facilities in hospitals for O&P.
-To work with international organisations/NGOs to support private sector.
-To conduct market surveys and inform professionals about the availability of reasonable materials and components.
-To encourage investors to install local industry for the manufacturing of materials and components locally, this will be a major source for employement of CPOs.
-To struggle for scholarships in international institutes like Strathclyde, Latrobe, and BUFA etc.to send CPOs for higher education.
-To organise congresses/seminars/professional forums for awareness and professional development.
-To collect and publish the statistics about the patients and professionals in Pakistan.

  15. Mahmood Ahmed says:

    Dear Kazmi

Hope for the best of your health

I appericate your struggle and working regarding future of O&P professionals

I would like to suggest you that you should select few responsible persons to make a local O&P council.
Initially they start working on local bases, after when you realize that they did enough work the board will make PC-1 and will present to ISPO and to the Local Govt. and then follow up the orthers procedures

For opening O&P Councils you should not required on the O&P professional also you should contacts the burocracy and Doctors .

Any how best of luck for your stuggle and now i feel that we have some sourt of council who listen and work for O&P .
Any type of help regarding my side will be more than welcome.

    Thanks

  18. Asif says:

    Dear

we agree from the proposal of Sir Mazhar
    He always gave new idea.
But Our O&P fellow not cooperate with us
I abservr that there is hesitation in participating
any type of gathering or unification .
more than 250 professionals in this field
but till now only 18 comments?
    this prove P&O involment.
    tell me who will work
i am requesting please participate from the begining
    for acheiving some goal

  19. 250 energetic professionals, excellent profession, millions of patients waiting for appliances. Yes, we can
Let’s go to the next step
-One representative from Punjab (will be nominated by CPOs from Punjab)
-One representative from Sindh (will be nominated by CPOs from Sindh)
-One representative from Pakhtoonkhwa (N.W.F.P) (will be nominated by CPOs from P.Khwa)
-One representative from Baluchistan (will be nominated by CPOs from Baluchistan)
-One representative from Abroad (will be nominated by CPOs from Abroad)

These 5 persons will be the Council’s Cabinet Members (CCM). Theses CCM will elect one of them as the Council Chair Person(CCP) of the council, who will work on the post for one year.
Each CCM will choose three CPOs from his/her respective province/domain. They will be called Regional Co-ordinators(RCO).CCM will work for two years, but can be replaced by the majority of the Council General Members(CGM) of his/her respective province/domain after six months of holding the responsibility.
Now it is the time to nominate the 5 CCM.All CGMs have to nominate appropriate persons from their province/domain, and whoever is nominated by more CGMs will be the CCM from that constituency. If nobody was nominated from a province/domain, indivisuals will be asked to present their names for nomination and CGMs will be asked to vote for them. I hope this situation will not come and all the colleagues will take interest to nominate the persons of their choice.

I am nominating Shaheen Khan (Qatar) as CCM. from abroad.
    Regards to all

  20. Asif says:

    250 CPO is really strength
    but what Balochistan will do
    only 2 CPO are ????
again I am requesting to all
    plz participate
We r facing this attitude for NAPO too
The Idea for making CCM & CCP is good
but still CPO r not unify even a nme
thanks for Sir Mazhar at least he nominated some one

    A.O.A
i truely agree with all the sugessions given by the above fellows. Mr Irtaza Kazmi gave an option for improving this field but if we all work together we can get good results. the first step is to create an awareness team. If we look in the peripheral PnO centres of pakistan, it gives a lesson of being dominated by the other professional medical fields.
we really need to take a start.
    Thanks

  29. Dear Irtiza,
    hope you are well.
It is always warming to read you. Indeed, it is a big challenge to bring unity in any segment of our beloved country.O&p is no more exception. I think it might be a dream to bring each and every one on a single platform. In my opinion we should have more localized bodies which may eventually merge to form a bigger one. May Allah bless every one.
